Lufhansa and Fraport have opened a redesigned departure gate at Frankfurt Airport, introducing new digital services, mobile boarding assistance and lounge-style seating as part of a joint effort to improve the passenger experience.

The new “Gate of the Future” at Gate A16 in Terminal 1 was officially inaugurated by Francesco Sciortino, Lufthansa Airlines board member and Frankfurt hub manager, and Dietmar Focke, chief operating officer of Fraport.

What Passengers Can Expect

The redesigned area is intended to make waiting for a flight more comfortable while helping passengers receive information and board more efficiently. Lufthansa and Fraport will use the gate to test new services and determine which features could be introduced elsewhere at the airport.

One of the most visible changes is the installation of large wall monitors and 360-degree displays showing departure times, boarding status, hand luggage information and live gate-change updates.

QR codes also give passengers direct access to digital self-service options, including the Lufthansa app.

The boarding process has also been redesigned. Instead of relying on a fixed service counter, staff move around the gate to answer questions and assist passengers with seat reservations, upgrades and rebookings.

Each mobile assistant carries a tablet connected to boarding systems through a single interface, allowing staff to access relevant information and manage tasks such as automated gate announcements.

The physical environment has undergone a significant change as well. The gate now includes flexible workspaces, private work cubes, comfortable sofas and selected artworks, creating an atmosphere closer to an airport lounge than a conventional departure area.

Focus on Passenger Experience in the Air and on the Ground

Sciortino said the project reflects Lufthansa’s focus on passenger service both in the air and on the ground, describing the new gate as another milestone in the airline’s partnership with Fraport.

Focke said testing innovations in everyday airport operations would help the partners identify practical improvements that make travel more convenient while optimizing processes at Frankfurt.

The project will serve as a testing ground for future airport developments. Feedback and observations from Gate A16 will help determine which services and design elements could be extended to other gates and areas of Frankfurt Airport.

The opening comes as Lufthansa and Fraport continue working to strengthen Frankfurt's position as a major European aviation hub. Both companies also highlighted improvements in punctuality over the summer, with the airport recording its best punctuality results since 2016, according to their announcement.
