Powerful Earthquake Hits Philippines' Second-Largest Island

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) in Mindanao. There are no immediate reports of damage or casualties

The series of earthquakes in the East continues. After several earthquakes with magnitudes between 5 and 6 were recorded recently, another relatively powerful tremor struck the Philippines this morning, January 28, 2026.

According to local authorities, the epicenter of the 5.9-magnitude quake was in the southern Philippines' Mindanao region, the country's second-largest island. The earthquake struck about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) below the surface and was felt well there, according to local media. However, no details were released about damage or casualties.

As mentioned, in recent days, there has been a significant series of earthquakes in the East, including in China and Indonesia. 

On January 26, a ferry disaster in the Philippines left 18 dead and 24 missing as of Tuesday, January 27.
