The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has announced a collaboration with three autonomous-vehicle technology companies to test driverless electric shuttles at Newark Liberty International Airport in the spring of 2026.

The move is intended to test automated transportation solutions that will connect existing airport facilities to the new AirTrain system under construction. The system is expected to open in 2030, while planning is progressing for a future Terminal B to be built adjacent to the future AirTrain station.

The three companies selected to participate in the trials are Oceaneering, which will be tested in March, Ohmio, which will be tested later this month, and Glydways, which will be tested in May. Each company will operate zero-emission electric vehicles for approximately two weeks in a closed area within the field complex. The trials will simulate a high-capacity shuttle network with multiple vehicles operating simultaneously in a complex operational environment.

The Newark trials join a series of previous demonstrations that the authority has conducted at other airports in the region. Pilot flights were conducted at JFK in the summer of 2024, and previous trials took place as early as 2022.
