Vasil Levski Sofia Airport marks a major milestone, celebrating two decades since Wizz Air established its base in the Bulgarian capital in 2016.

Ever since, Wizz Air has turned into a central player in the airport’s development, carrying more than 25 million passengers to and from the city over the years while boosting tourism, business travel, and regional mobility.

The anniversary comes alongside further expansion. Wizz Air has added an eighth aircraft to its Sofia base, increasing flight frequencies and overall capacity. For summer 2026, the airline is offering more than 3.4 million seats from Sofia, its highest capacity level yet.

Jesús Caballero Pinto, CEO of SOF Connect: “Over the past 20 years, Wizz Air has been a key strategic partner, contributing significantly to the growth of connectivity, passenger traffic, and the overall competitiveness of the capital’s airport."

"We value our successful partnership and remain committed to working together to further develop Sofia as a leading regional hub, providing passengers with more choice, improved services, and seamless travel opportunities. We look forward to building on this momentum in the years ahead,” Pinto added.

Wizz Air also pointed to the anniversary as a sign of its long-term commitment to Bulgaria and the role Sofia plays within its wider network.

Salvatore Gabriele Imperiale, Corporate Communications Manager at Wizz Air: “This anniversary highlights our long-term commitment to Bulgaria. Today we are the market leader with eleven based aircraft and an extensive network connecting Bulgarian passengers with destinations and cultures across Europe and beyond.

Sofia is at the heart of our regional operations, and with this year’s record capacity growth and the millions of passengers carried so far, we look to the next 20 years with optimism and determination to continue offering easy and affordable travel opportunities to Bulgarian passengers. Let’s WIZZ, Sofia!"

To mark the occasion, the airline has also introduced a promotional campaign, offering discounts of up to 20% on more than 30 routes from Sofia.

The milestone underlines how the partnership between the airport and the airline has helped position Sofia as an important hub for low-cost travel in the region, with further growth expected in the years ahead.
