The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is preparing for one of its busiest travel periods in recent years, with nearly 18.7 million passengers expected to pass through U.S. airport security checkpoints over the Fourth of July holiday travel window, as Americans also mark preparations for the country’s 250th anniversary of independence.

The agency said it expects the highest surge on Thursday, July 2, when more than 3 million travelers are projected to be screened in a single day. TSA officials described the holiday period as a major operational test, with staffing levels, technology upgrades and inter-agency coordination all increased to manage demand.

“We’re thrilled so many passengers are planning travel to enjoy America’s milestone 250th birthday,” said TSA Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Administrator Ha Nguyen McNeill. She added that checkpoints are “fully staffed and prepared,” pointing to new screening technologies and expanded partnerships with airports and government agencies aimed at improving both security and efficiency.

Beyond holiday travel, TSA highlighted its broader security preparations for upcoming major global events, including the FIFA World Cup 2026. The agency said it is expanding support across 11 U.S. host cities, with increased staffing, canine teams, National Deployment Officers and advanced detection systems positioned at key airports and transportation hubs. Additional support is also being provided for stadiums, fan zones and training sites.

The Federal Air Marshal Service has also deployed personnel across host cities to support event security, including the use of radiological detection tools and counter-unmanned aircraft systems. TSA said it is also assisting with the secure movement of teams, officials and VIPs through commercial and private aviation channels.

At the same time, the agency is expanding programs aimed at improving the travel experience for military personnel and veterans. Initiatives include expanded TSA PreCheck access, expedited screening under the VETS Safe Travel Act, and front-of-the-line access for service members at select airports near major military installations.

TSA also announced plans for a new Veterans Ambassador Initiative launching in early July, designed to improve screening assistance for veterans needing additional support. Travelers are being encouraged to arrive early at airports and use digital tools and pre-screening programs to reduce delays during the peak travel period.
