The airline announced that its new "Large Dog On Board" service will launch on August 3, 2026, with tickets available for purchase immediately through its Customer Information Assistance Office. The initiative follows a successful demonstration flight between Milan Linate and Rome Fiumicino last year, during which two large dogs traveled alongside passengers in the cabin.
Initially, the service will be available on selected domestic routes and will operate under regulations approved by the Italian Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC).
Under the new policy, passengers will be able to travel with dogs weighing up to 30 kilograms in Business Class and up to 15 kilograms in Economy Class. The animals will occupy designated spaces within the cabin rather than traveling in traditional pet carriers.
During the first two months, flights will also accommodate up to two smaller dogs weighing up to 10 kilograms in Economy Class, provided they are seated at least eight rows away from larger animals. That number is expected to increase to four in a later phase.
ITA Airways said the move represents a significant milestone for Italian commercial aviation and reflects growing demand from travelers wishing to fly alongside their pets.
"With the launch of the Large Dog On Board service, ITA Airways is taking a concrete step toward a way of traveling that is increasingly attentive to the needs of its passengers," said CEO and General Manager Joerg Eberhart.

The airline plans to gradually expand the service across its domestic network and eventually introduce it on international flights, subject to approval from relevant authorities.

For dog owners, the prospect of avoiding the cargo hold and keeping their four-legged companions nearby could make flying a much more comfortable experience, for both humans and pets.
