Spain's airport operator Aena has highlighted plans for a significant boost to air connectivity in Spain's Galicia region following the announcement that Wizz Air is expected to establish an operations base at Santiago-Rosalía de Castro Airport in 2027.

Wizz Air announced that its new base in Santiago de Compostela will have one based aircraft and seven new routes connecting Galicia with more destinations across Spain and Europe."

The airline explained that the expansion represents "more choice, easier journeys and new opportunities for people across Galicia", allowing them to stay connected and "explore more."

According to Aena, the development could serve as a catalyst for further airline investment across Galicia, benefiting not only Santiago de Compostela but also the region's other airports in A Coruña and Vigo.

"The establishment of Wizz Air's base at Santiago-Rosalía de Castro Airport could become a virtuous circle that serves as an incentive for other companies to focus on Galicia and on the airports of A Coruña and Vigo," said Ignacio Biosca, Aena's Director of Data and Aeronautical Market and head of the Air Connectivity Working Group of Galicia.

The comments were made during an event marking the presentation of the new operations base, which is scheduled to open in 2027. Marcos Díaz, Director of Santiago-Rosalía de Castro Airport, also attended the event alongside representatives from regional institutions.
