International Workers' Day, also known as Labor Day or May Day, is celebrated every year on May 1 by airlines worldwide. As usual, companies take advantage of the opportunity to highlight their workers and bring tributes to their employees via social media. It's also a moment when unions push for better pay or working conditions, especially amid ongoing staffing shortages in aviation.
Like every year, activists worldwide will kick off a series of rallies, asking for better wages and improved working conditions.
On the occasion, the Association of Flight Attendants - CWA, AFL-CIO issued the following statement: "May 1st is a significant day in labor history, marking a moment to stand in Solidarity and celebrate workers. May Day honors a movement that has supported workers' organizing efforts since 1886, beginning with labor strikes during the Haymarket Affair in Chicago.
Labor Rights are human rights. Stand together and continue to fight for workers' rights by joining a May Day demonstration near you."
As reported last week, Greece is also facing a complete standstill in public transportation today, as trade unions representing maritime, rail, and urban transit sectors will go on a 24-hour nationwide strike.
In the meantime, airlines are posting celebratory messages that need no further introduction:
Malaysia Airlines on X: "Some jobs don’t clock out when the rest of the world does. They carry on in the background, in the margins, during the hours most people don’t think about. Today, we’re thinking about them, and we’re grateful. Happy Labour Day."

Prague Airport also made a special but surprising announcement on X: "Celebrate May 1st, the day of love, with us. Visit our photo spot with a blooming cherry tree in Terminal 2." The explanation is simple: while the rest of the world celebrates Labor Day on May 1, the Czech Republic celebrates the 1st of May as love day. On this day, lovers are expected to gather under a blossom tree (preferably a cherry tree or a birch) and share a kiss. Legend also has it that girls who do not get kissed will wither and die in twelve months!
