The world's largest American airline, American Airlines, has announced a large-scale move to upgrade the flight experience by installing the Starlink satellite internet system on more than 500 narrow-body aircraft starting in the first quarter of 2027.

The system, developed by SpaceX, is based on thousands of satellites in low Earth orbit and enables ultra-fast, low-latency internet connectivity. According to the company, the service will support live viewing of content, online gaming, video calling, working on collaborative systems and continuous browsing - similar to a home internet experience.

American Airlines explains that the move is intended to significantly improve the flight experience for the company's passengers on domestic routes and short-haul international flights.

“As a premium global airline, we are continuously seeking out world-class partners like Starlink to deliver what our customers need and want,” said American Airlines Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden. “The addition of Starlink solidifies American as a leading airline in keeping passengers connected in flight.”

According to her, the new system will allow passengers to work, watch content and stay connected throughout the flight, without delays or the need for pre-downloads.

Starlink also welcomed the collaboration. Jason Fritch, vice president of enterprise sales at the company, said the service will provide “fast and reliable internet to passengers and crew.”

The system will be installed on the company's Airbus aircraft, including the new A321neo and A321XLR models that will enter the fleet in the coming years.
