At the end of May, we announced that American Airlines will enable ultra-fast connectivity on domestic and short-haul flights starting in 2027. The airline will offer passengers the option of streaming, gaming and making real-time video calls.

In a similar announcement today, June 8, 2026,  Starlink is set to bring high-speed in-flight internet to Wizz Air flights, marking a major upgrade in onboard connectivity, also expected to roll out next year. The announcement was also shared by Wizz Air, which confirmed that the low-cost carrier will introduce Starlink-powered Wi-Fi across its fleet, enabling passengers to stream, scroll, and stay connected throughout their journey.

“RIP Airplane Mode,” Wizz Air wrote in a social media post, highlighting the shift toward always-on connectivity in the skies.

“For years, high-quality onboard connectivity was treated as a luxury perk,” the airline noted, adding that it aims to change that by making reliable internet available to millions of passengers.

“In 2027, we're taking that philosophy into the space era,” said Ian Malin, Chief Commercial Officer of Wizz Air. “Our customers shouldn't have to choose between affordable fares and reliable internet onboard.”

He added that the airline is “proud to lead that change” in partnership with Starlink, describing the rollout as a way to better connect passengers “to the people, work, and moments that matter most.”

According to Wizz Air, installations will begin in 2027, with every new generation aircraft expected to be equipped with Starlink technology. The system is designed to provide high-speed, low-latency internet at cruising altitude across all routes.

Starlink also said the partnership will help transform the passenger experience.

“We’re thrilled to bring Starlink onboard Wizz Air and transform the travel experience for millions of its customers,” said Jason Fritch, Vice President of Starlink Enterprise Sales at SpaceX. “Keeping passengers and crew seamlessly connected at 30,000 feet is exactly what this technology was built to do.”

Wizz Air said the initiative removes what it called the long-standing compromise of ultra-low-cost travel, where passengers were often forced to disconnect during flights, arguing instead that modern travel should keep people connected throughout their journey.

Starlink said its satellite network will deliver seamless onboard connectivity, designed to support streaming, messaging, and browsing without interruption even at cruising altitude.

The rollout is expected to position Wizz Air among the growing number of airlines adopting next-generation satellite internet systems to improve the passenger experience.

Once implemented, the service will remove one of the last remaining offline spaces in modern travel, as airlines continue to compete on digital comfort and in-flight entertainment options.
